International House (IH) Certificate.

(Directors of Studies/ Assistants of Directors of Studies),

Hi, I’m Cheryl and I’m Australian. This is my second time in Moscow, and with Lingua.ru. I spent 18 months here in 2007 and 2008, and I loved it here so much that I wanted to come back again, so I did! After I left Moscow in May 2008, I did a lot of travelling. I went to Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, France and Switzerland, but I didn’t find another place that I love as much as I love Moscow. I also really enjoy teaching at Lingua.ru. The students are so friendly and eager to learn, and it’s a pleasure to teach them as they love talking! I plan to try to learn Russian while I’m here this time, and also to discover a little more of Moscow and the Russian way of life.

My name is David, and I’m from Alberta, Canada. I taught at Lingua for nearly two years before taking a break to return to Canada to study photography. Lingua is a positive learning environment for both students and teachers.

I’m very happy to be back in Moscow, one of my favorite places in the world. It's a beautiful city full of arresting architecture, a compelling history, and stimulating people.

Alex Snelling Hello, my name is Alex, I was born in London, and, apart from a year in Spain, I have lived there all my life. At university I studied Classics, Latin and ancient Greek, and after a brief stint training in law and accountancy I worked in the City for a number of companies. At the beginning of 2009 I retrained as a teacher and, after applying for a few jobs, came to Moscow at the beginning of August. I chose Moscow because of my interest in the country, my desire to learn the language and the opportunity to experience a city as vibrant as London, but perhaps with greater extremes. So far it hasn’t disappointed, although my Russian is still terrible. I am learning however. Since starting to teach here I’ve been struck by the openness and affability of the Russian character and the startlingly fresh viewpoint they bring to even the most conventional of questions. I’m really enjoying my time here and I hope to see you all soon.
Alex

KateHi!! I'm Kate and I'm a teacher with Lingua.Ru. I was born in Moscow and have lived here all my life. I love this city and all that it has to offer. Most of all, I love that I can do all sorts of interesting things in Moscow in one day; for example I can find a quiet spot to sit and read a book, then go to an exhibition, meet some friends in a cafe and finally go to a great rock concert at night.

I graduated from Moscow State Linguistic University in 2005 with a linguistic degree that allows me to teach English. I worked as an English teacher in a secondary school for a year but soon decided that my real love was teaching English to adults. I decided to become a lab teacher at Lingua and took my IH certificate which allows me to teach English to non-native speakers. After a year, I achieved my dream of being an English teacher at Lingua.Ru!

My favourite part about teaching is when I get a chance to see the advances that our students make. Because of Lingua's system, sometimes we don't see a student for a few weeks and when we see them the next time, their progress seems magical! I love seeing that and knowing that I was a part of it!!

I can't wait to see you around our school, make sure you come up and say hi!

NeilHi, my name's Katrine and I’m from Moscow. Well, here is my story. I graduated from the State University of Management with a degree in human resources. I worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers, HR department, for 2 years, which was a great experience for me and I developed both professionally and personally there.

I used to be a student at Lingua.ru myself and as a student I loved this school so much. Lingua is really unique! There is always a special atmosphere with friendly and helpful teachers and staff. Students have a great opportunity to study with different teachers and practice English a lot in classes, in the hall and in our nice kitchen. :) I was really upset to leave Lingua when I finished it.

Although I worked in a great team, during my second year with PwC I realized that working in an office, sitting in front of my computer for the whole day and preparing different reports are not as fascinating as I had thought. I wanted to do something more rewarding. By that time I’d finished Advanced and absolutely fallen in love with the English language. So, I decided to become an English teacher. While working for PwC, I continued studying English and I passed both the FCE and then the CAE. After that I earned my CELTA certificate which has allowed me to get a job at Lingua.ru. Finally, my dream to return to Lingua as a teacher came true in March 2008!

NeilMy name’s Neil. I was born in England, but I have lived in other countries more than I have lived in England. I lived in Spain for 13 years, and then I moved to South America. I lived in Costa Rica, Colombia and Peru. After living in hot places for so long, I decided it was time for a change. That’s when I decided to come to Moscow.

Before coming here I had never spoken to a Russian person. I had no idea what was waiting for me here. I have been here for a couple of months now, and I’m enjoying everything, especially teaching at Lingua. The students, other teachers and staff have made all the difference. I have never met such enthusiastic students, and I have taught many during my time teaching in South America.

The only difficulty so far has been the Russian language. I speak Spanish, but I find Russian very difficult. I’m sure that being surrounded by such friendly people will help me to learn about Russia and its language.

I hope to see and teach you soon.

AlinaMy name’s Alina and I’m from New York.

I choose to teach English in Moscow because my parents are originally from here (they moved to the USA when I was a baby) and I’ve always wanted to live in Russia and learn more about its people, culture and history. I like my job because I work with people and also because languages have always been a passion for me.

JamesHi, my name is Victoria and I am a teacher here at Lingua.

I was born in Komsomolsk-na-Amure, in the Far East, but moved at a young age and grew up in Belarus. I studied English at Minsk State Linguistic University and graduated in 2001. Following my graduation, I received my International House (IH) certificate and then started working for IH Minsk. In Minsk, I taught English to a wide variety of students; from adults to children and Beginner to Advanced. In 2003, I moved to Moscow and started working with Lingua.

Since I started working with Lingua, I have found a new love for teaching English. From 2004-2005 I was a Sr. teacher at Lingua but I returned to the classroom because I found that I enjoyed interacting with students a lot more than doing administrative work. Especially here, the students are so willing and motivated to learn and the staff is wonderful — very helpful and friendly. Additionally, I really enjoy the teaching methods (it is so much fun to teach everyone from Beginners to Advanced in one evening!!) and interaction that I have with so many different people here at Lingua!! In particular, I love doing clubs; you never know which or how many students will come and it is always an adventure.

I look forward to meeting you!!
Vicky

I was born in Phoenix, Arizona, one of the hottest cities in the United States. I had an interest in Russia and the Soviet Union since childhood, and began studying Russian in high school at the age of 14. During my three years of study I traveled to Southern Russia as part of an exchange. Since then, I decided that I wanted to return to Russia and worked very hard to do so. After seven years, I finally accomplished that goal. In addition to Russian, I have also studied Polish, Serbo-Croatian, and a number of other languages, and I have a basic understanding of other languages ranging from German to Japanese. At the moment I am studying Tatar. In addition to linguistics, I have a passion for history and politics, writing, and I enjoy intellectual discussions, good food, and the company of intelligent people.

Alex BabarisAlex Babaris —

Hi! I’m Alex and I am from Canada. Born in Toronto, I moved to Peterborough, Ontario to attend university. I studied history there for five years and loved every minute of it. Once I graduated, I moved on to Carleton University, located in Canada’s capital, Ottawa, to obtain a Master’s Degree from Carleton University. There I studied in the Faculty of European and Russian Studies. While there, I had the opportunity to study Russian and was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to study in Russia for two summers. Something made me want to spend more time in this beautiful country in which you live!

I have had an interest in teaching for a very long time; in fact, almost all of my jobs have revolved around teaching in some capacity. Most recently, I coached swimming for a swim team in Ottawa. It was there I learned the value of patience, especially since two of my swimmers in the past year came to the team speaking no English! Right there, I knew that it would be a very interesting and rewarding experience to teach English.

Although I have only been at Lingua.Ru a short time, I’ve found everyone here to be very nice. The staff is especially helpful and the students are a joy to teach. I really enjoy working with people who are interested in learning. In fact, teaching’s best reward is the feeling that you get when someone who has been struggling with something finally gets whatever they were attempting to learn. As a teacher, that is one of the best feelings in the world and that is why I teach!

JobyHello, I’m Joby. Born in England, I’ve lived there for most of my life, but

have traveled around a bit too. It’s great to have arrived in Moscow. Although the city is new to me, I feel at home already.

Since graduating from The University of Bristol, I’ve completed a TEFL course and worked in a variety of places. After one week of teaching at Lingua.Ru I already feel inspired to stay here for a long time. The students and the general atmosphere make it a great place to work.

Hello, I'm Svetlana. I've been teaching English for 7 years now (can't believe it myself!), almost a year with Lingua.ru. I graduated from Minsk State Linguistic University, then taught interpreting at the Management and Law Institute in Minsk. When I came to International House Minsk, I learnt how to teach English with pleasure both for teacher and for students. There I got my IH Certificate in teaching English and worked 5 years teaching kids and adults of all levels. Then I decided to move to Moscow for a change.

What I love most about Lingua are highly motivated students and the flexible schedule.
In my free time I like reading, going out with my family and friends, playing with my three-year-old son and playing computer games :).

"Intelligent, educated, strong, independent thinkers and what a different mentality! These were my strongest impressions of Russians a few months after my arrival here in Moscow 4 years ago. I had never met people so interested in Life. Muscovites always seem ready to do anything, to meet with friends. I almost always heard the same answer when I proposed to anybody here to do anything-"Why not?", "Pochimu Nyet?" It was so good to be in a place where people are so interested in doing things with other people. In America, where I come from, life is much more planned and it's difficult to get anybody to do anything socially. Often I would call a friend and he would say something like- "can you call me back in 20 minutes I'm watching the Simpsons". I was surprised when it never happened here in Moscow.

Russians/Muscovites are unique and I hope they never change, i.e. never become westernized."

"There are two reasons why I became an ESL teacher: First, teaching is something I wanted to do in my life. Being of service to others is one of the best things a person can do. Next, as the extent of my international experience only reached Tijuana (just inside the Mexican border), I wanted to live in different parts of the world. Teaching provided a means for both.

So after earning a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Nevada at Las Vegas and working for a public interest group advocating voting rights for over two years, I took a position in the Republic of Korea.

My school and home were situated in Sanbon, a small town only twenty minutes away from Seoul, South Korea's capital. I taught children and teenagers ranging from ages 8-16, and even taught pre-school for a month. Korea is one of the world's most literate countries. And many schoolchildren have 17-hour schooldays!

Aside from teaching I wrote features for Seoul Classified Magazine and contributed to a column on teaching for the Joongang Daily newspaper.

Having completed my contract I took a ferry to Vladivostok, Russia, and traveled from perhaps the last country divided between Socialism and Democracy to Moscow-the face of the former Soviet Union-via the trans-Siberian Railway.

Russia drew me mainly because I'm interested in politics. In the last hundred years it has gone from a Monarchy to a Socialist state and is currently a Democracy. That's very unique.

Teaching at Lingua is different from my experience in Korea. Every class is different here, whereas I had traditional classes which met two or three times a week in Korea. Also, I teach mainly adults now, compared to only teaching children and teenagers in my last position. I've gained more mature students here and I can discuss a myriad of topics with them in our clubs which gives them needed practice and me a better understanding of Russian society."
